First Impressions

When I was a senior in college I took a course called The Holocaust. The last class, our professor, invited a concentration camp survivor to speak. Over the 2 hour session, she described in detail the atrocities she witnessed. The last thing she said was, “When Dachau was liberated, I was exhausted I couldn’t even get up to rejoice. I saw a US soldier walking towards me. He picked me up easily, as I weighed only 70lbs. He hugged me. I’ve been hugging him ever since. We’ve been married for the last 45 years.” There was not a dry eye in the room. That day, I learned how empathy can be a foundation for love…but mostly I learned her husband does not give a fuck about first impressions.
